World Superbikes - Vallelunga Preview
September 18, 2008
This weekend sees the World Superbikes Championship travel to the Autodromo ‘Piero Taruffi’ di Vallelunga in Italy for only the second time, after a successful debut for the circuit last year.
This time last year three riders were stilil in with a strong shout of taking the WSB crown, whereas this year the title looks all but tied up for Troy Bayliss. The Australian could seal his third championship this weekend if results go favourably for him or he takes things into his own hands and wins both races.
The battle for second is certainly not over however. Recent races has seen an in-form Troy Corser move up into second place, but German Max Neukirchner is just four points behind him. Carlos Checa and teammate Ryuichi Kiyonari are then fourth and fifth respectively.
There is then a good 40-point gap to the battle for sixth place, so therefore it looks increasingly likely that the final two podium places will come from the riders above.
The Vallelunga Circuit is situated 20 miles north of Rome and was originally built as a 1.1 mile sand oval. However recent extensions have taken the course to over 2.5 miles and is being used more and more by the major car and bike racing series.
