World Superbikes - Phillip Island Race One

The 2009 World Superbikes Championship officially kicked off yesterday with race one of the Phillip Island weekend, and it was Japanese rider Noriyuki Haga on his factory Ducati 1098R who took the spoils.
Almost 70,000 spectators watched Haga snatch the win from German Max Neukirchner on the final lap to record his first win for the Ducati Xerox team and 34th of his career.
The race was officially declared ‘wet’ before the start, but there wasn’t any actual rain apart from a few drops towards the end of the race with all riders opting for slicks anyway.
It was a race to forget for promising rookie Ben Spies, on pole postition at the start of the race, who ended up in the gravel on the second turn. He eventually managed to get back on track and finish 16th, just outside the points.
