Updates On Injuries From Phillip Island Crashes

March 6, 2008

The second round of the HANNspree World Championship Superbikes in Australia last weekend saw some spectacular racing but was also punctuated by some pretty serious injuries to riders.

The most serious incident of the weekend was probably the collision between Vittorio Iannuzzo and Michel Fabrizio. Italian Ianuzzi slammed into compatriot Fabrizio early in the first race, fracturing and completely dislocating his left wrist. He was rushed to hospital in Melbourne where he underwent surgery. A second operation was carried out a few days later, and he won’t be able to return to Italy until mid March. It’s likely the Kawasaki Pedercini rider will be be out for 2-3 months.

Fabrizio was much more fortunate in the collision, just suffering heavy bruising to his right leg. He will be required to rest for the next 2 weeks or so.

The other rider to suffer an injury on the Phillip Island course was Max Biaggi, who crashed out of both races at the weekend. The Italian Ducati rider suffered a compound fracture to his left wrist in his race crash and was immediately plaster cast at the course. He will be in the cast until March 25 when he will have further checks to see how well its healed, but he is expected to be ready for the third round of the Championship in Valencia on April 6.
