Troy Bayliss Escapes Uninjured From Photo Shoot Crash

March 31, 2008

World Superbikes Championship leader Troy Bayliss was lucky to walk away from a crash on a brand new Ducati Hypermotard last week.

The Australian wasn’t even a lap around the Arma di Taggia karting track in northern Italy before crashing out and slightly aggravating the elbow injury he picked up in qualifying at Phillip Island. Bayliss was riding the 1100cc supermoto for a photo shoot with Ducati.

After the crash, which also wrote off a brand new set of leathers and helmet he was breaking in before this week’s World Superbikes race in Valencia, Bayliss vowed to only ride his Xerox Ducati bike in future.

“Last week I had to go and do a photo shoot on a Hypermotard.”, the veteran rider said. “I was riding on a really small go kart track, which is renowned for being slippery.

“I used to do a bit of Supermoto there but I don’t anymore because it’s too dangerous.

“I hopped on the Hypermotard, out I went and I didn’t even make one lap before I crashed.

“It was a brand new bike and I put it into the wall at the first left hander I got to. I ended up hurting my elbow a bit more but it’s all good now.

“My team boss Davide Tardozzi was there so we were able to have a good laugh about it.

“I had brand new leathers, helmet, boots, gloves as I thought it was a good chance to try and break them in.

“From now on I don’t think I’m going to ride any bike other than my race bike.”
