Spies Comes From Behind To Win Road Atlanta Race Two

September 2, 2008

Ben Spies fought from behind to record his first race win in eight races and provisionally confirm his status as the 2008 AMA Superbikes Champion, pending Mat Mladin’s appeal over his VIR points penalty.

Sunday’s race looked like it was going to be a repeat of Saturday’s one-sided procession, Mladin storming straight to the front and building up a strong lead. The Australian was 3 and a half seconds up on Spies at the halfway point when the race began to turn.

Spies began reigning the leader back in and by lap 19 was overtaking him and cruising through to a comfortable vistory of over 7 seconds as Mladin conceded the race in the last few laps.

Spies now holds an unassailable lead of 620 to 519 over his teammate and rival Mladin going into the final round of the season on September 27-28, unless Mladin’s VIR wins are reinstated in which case the lead is a lesser but still imposing 620-593.
