Mladin Wins Race One At Road Atlanta
September 1, 2008
Matt Mladin took what turned out to be fairly comfortable win for him in the opening race at Road Atlanta on Saturday, while teammate Ben Spies recovered from a nightmare start to take second.
Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki rider Mladin has now notched up seven consecutive race wins to match Spies’ record set earlier this season.
Spies was set to make it a difficult race for Mladin, starting from pole when it all went wrong. Seconds before the race was about to start Spies noticed a problem with his bike and began frantically waving his arm and creeping forward to allow others to pass him. He eventually got the bike going to reach the first corner in eighth place, but his luck soon got worse as he was informed he would need to take a drive through penalty for technically jumping the start.
After taking his penalty on lap 3 he emerged in 12th place, 16 seconds off the lead. Spies then went on to record multiple fastest laps to rip his way through the field and take an impressive second place considering the circumstances.
