Mladin Opens AMA Superbikes 2009 With Impressive Win
March 25, 2009
Mat Mladin began the 2009 AMA Superbikes Championship in style earlier this month, winning his 7th career AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike race at Daytona International Speedway.
It is the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider’s second successive win at Daytona, his fifth in the last six years and seventh overall since 2000.
Mladin led for 10 out of the 15 laps, eventually winning the race comfortably in the absence of former teammate and rival Ben Spies who has made the move up to World Superbikes.
Neil Hodgson and Tommy Hayden battled it out for second place, with Hodgson eventually getting the nod after the near dead-heat had to be decided with a photo finish.
