Mladin Dominates in Championship Opener

The opening race of the 2008 AMA Superbikes Championship brought few surprises today as Mat Mladin ran away with the opening race of the season, leading from start to finish and never really looking under pressure. The Australian was followed by Suzuki teammate Ben Spies, who finished 4 seconds behind him after a shaky start on the Daytona International Speedway.
It’s a perfect start to the year for Mladin, who also scored the bonus point for achieving pole position in qualifying. It’s a complete turnaround of his fortunes in last season’s opening race where he crashed out giving teammate Spies a huge advantage at the start of the Championship.
Both riders, on their Suzuki GSX-R1000 machines, finished well ahead of the rest of the pack, the closest being Jason DiSalvo who was just over 15 seconds behind Spies. It was quite a result for DiSalvo - the youngster was nearly dropped by team Yamaha USA at the end of last season, ultimately being kept on by the Yamaha team. Their faith in him was well rewarded as he followed up a first front row start with a first ever podium finish.
Mladin and Spies will both be battling each once again in the next round of the AMA Superbikes Championship at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama on April 18-20.
