Making Your Own Superbike!
November 18, 2008
With the superbike racing season all but over now and no racing action until later next year, it won’t be long before people are itching to see some races on two wheels. In the meantime, it might be worth looking at how the various teams go about creating their superbikes.
Generally speaking, a team has to begin with a bike that can be legally ridden on the road and have at least 100 registered as on the road in the UK. For example, last season saw the introduction of the Ducati 1098R in British Superbikes, however there looked to be problems selling the required 100 bikes before the deadline of June 1. Therefore the Italian manufacturer took the step of pre-registering the remaining bikes themselves, allowing them to be sold at a later date.
The next step for the team is then working on making particular tuning tweaks and upgrades, i.e. brakes, chain and sprocket sets, tyres, etc.
There are certain aspects to the bike that have to stay the same or limited as per the BSB’s regulations. For instance, each type of motorbike has a minimum weight value usually decided on from the bike’s standard weight and the amount of power it produces.
The bigger teams will spend a lot of money making sure their setup is just right for the rider, involving numerous small changes and tests, and at this level it is what makes the difference between the mid-placing teams and the Championship contenders.
