GSE Racing To Make Switch From Ducati To Yamaha

September 17, 2008

GSE Racing, the company behind the Airwaves Ducati team, announced last week that they will be changing to Yamaha bikes for 2009, leaving long term partners Ducati. The news confirms GSE Racing will be staying in British Superbikes despite the rumours linking them with a move to the World Superbikes stage.

The deal means GSE will be working closely with the Yamaha Italia WSB team to develop the racing bikes from normal production bikes. Their Ducati’s had come straight off the crate and ready to race so this is the first time they will build a race bike from the ground up.

Team boss Colin Wright said: “We will have to take the lights and indicators off the same as everyone else but we’ve got a decent-sized toolkit so I think we will be ok.

“The whole thing started with a conversation I had with Bozzy (Yamaha Race manager Nigel Bosworth) at Snetterton and it went from there. It’s a three-year deal so it provides us as a team with security and stability. We had a great relationship with Ducati but it was always one year to the next.”

Wright will aim to add to that stability by keeping hold of current rider Leon Camier and Shane Byrne for the 2009 season. “I won’t be talking to any other riders until I know the position with Shane and Leon.”

Yamaha Managing Director, Andrew Smith, added: “We are delighted to be partnering GSE Racing, the UK’s most successful race team, and together I am confident we can successfully build a long term relationship both on and off the race track.”
