End Of Year AMA Pro Racing Awards Banquet

Last weekend saw many of the AMA racing stars turn out for the annual AMA Pro Racing Awards Banquet, with champions from all the AMA classes making an appearance at the prestigious event.
In addition to the winners’ awards and already announced awards for ‘rookies of the year’, there were a few special awards handed out to those who had stood out from the crowd of AMA champions. The highest of the evening, the AMA SPEED Athlete of the Year Award, went to the 2008 AMA Motocross champion James Stewart. Stewart managed an incredible clean sweep of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Series winning all 24 races in the season. This spectacular feat had only once before been accomplished (by Ricky Carmichael who did it twice).
The AMA Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award went to Joe and Cheryl Swanson, whose efforts make the AMA Hillclimb Championship a possibility.
The AMA Award for Mechanical Excellence went to Tom Houseworth, crew chief for Ben Spies’ championship-winning effort.
