Spies Happy With AMA Title

September 9, 2008

Ben Spies has announced that winning the AMA Superbikes Championship for fourth time has made him and his team very happy, even though the controversy surrounding the win (none of it their own making) has put a slight dampener on the news.

Spies was originally expecting to be crowned champion on the last race day of the season, requiring just a 19th place finish to ensure he won the title. However AMA Pro Racing, the team behind the championship, announced on Friday that Spies’ teammate Mat Mladin’s disqualification from the Virginia races will stand, ending the battle for top spot early.

“Obviously this is not the ideal way for me to clinch the championship,” said Spies, who set a new AMA Superbike record of seven straight wins this summer. “Still, I’m happy for my crew who worked their butts off this year. It was a great season. We overcame a lot to win the title. I’ve won it just about every way imaginable now.”

The final race of the AMA Superbike season will be on September 28 at Laguna Seca.
