Troy Bayliss Escapes Uninjured From Photo Shoot Crash

World Superbikes Championship leader Troy Bayliss was lucky to walk away from a crash on a brand new Ducati Hypermotard last week.

The Australian wasn’t even a lap around the Arma di Taggia karting track in northern Italy before crashing out and slightly aggravating the elbow injury he picked up in qualifying at Phillip Island. Bayliss was riding the 1100cc supermoto for a photo shoot with Ducati. [read more]

2008 Superbike Testing In Valencia

Official superbike testing at Valencia ended today with some surprising results ahead of the third round of World Championship racing here on April 6th.

The first day of testing yesterday went very much by the form book, with Ruben Xaus recording the fastest time of the day on his home track. He did it in style too - the Spaniard recorded a time of 1′34.265, the fastest a superbike has ever gone round the Valencia circuit. [read more]

BSB 2008 Entry List Published

A wide open and very competitive entry list for the 2008 British Superbikes Championship was published yesterday. 31 riders have been confirmed to be racing over the 12 rounds this season, no doubt making this season one to remember.

Nobody will be racing with the number 1 plate this year - reigning champion Ryuchi Kiyonari having moved to compete in the World Superbikes Championship. Leon Haslam takes over as the main rider for the HM Plant Honda team, and will be joined by 2006 British Supersport Champion Cal Crutchlow. [read more]

New Zealand In Race For Championship Round

It is reported that New Zealand are chasing the possibility of hosting a round of the World Superbikes Championship for 3 years from 2010.

Motorcycling New Zealand president Sandra Perry says Championship organisers have accepted a bid, as long as certain conditions are met. [read more]

Michael Laverty On His Step Up To Superbikes

Mladin Dominates in Championship Opener

The opening race of the 2008 AMA Superbikes Championship brought few surprises today as Mat Mladin ran away with the opening race of the season, leading from start to finish and never really looking under pressure. The Australian was followed by Suzuki teammate Ben Spies, who finished 4 seconds behind him after a shaky start on the Daytona International Speedway. [read more]

Mladin Claims First Pole Of 2008

Mat Mladin drew first blood in the AMA Superbikes Championship yesterday, claiming the first pole position of the season in qualifying at Daytona International Speedway.

Mladin fought all through qualifying with teammate Ben Spies, both of them on their works Suzuki GSX-R1000s, but it was the Australian who won through in the end with a time of 1′35.759.

Indonesia Round Of Championship Cancelled

The 2008 World Superbike Championship has been cut to 14 rounds after it was confirmed the proposed race at Sentul in Indonesia has been dropped.

There were concerns when the provisional calendar was announced whether or not the Indonesian round would take place due to fears over safety at the track. But FIM safety inspector Claude Danis visited the Sentul track and declared it safe for racing.

No official reason has been given for the cancellation, however it is believed it is down to a lack of funding for the event caused by the withdrawel of support from the Indonesian government. [read more]

Updates On Injuries From Phillip Island Crashes

The second round of the HANNspree World Championship Superbikes in Australia last weekend saw some spectacular racing but was also punctuated by some pretty serious injuries to riders.

The most serious incident of the weekend was probably the collision between Vittorio Iannuzzo and Michel Fabrizio. Italian Ianuzzi slammed into compatriot Fabrizio early in the first race, fracturing and completely dislocating his left wrist. He was rushed to hospital in Melbourne where he underwent surgery. A second operation was carried out a few days later, and he won’t be able to return to Italy until mid March. It’s likely the Kawasaki Pedercini rider will be be out for 2-3 months. [read more]

BSB Television Coverage Confirmed For 2008

Motorsport Vision have today confirmed that the British Superbike Championship will receive its highest level of TV coverage for the 2008 season, both in the UK and internationally, with extensive deals struck with British Eurosport and Channel 4.

The deal with British Eurosport means 48 hours of live coverage and 66 hours of highlights will be broadcast to over 10 million homes on the satellite and cable channel over the coming year. Fans will be able to enjoy a regular 4-hour live race day show featuring both Bennetts BSB races, the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship and Henderson Yamaha R1 Cup support races all live with expert commentary and analysis. Race highlights will also be shown the same evening and throughout the week, including a “British Superbikes Extra” show on Thursdays. [read more]
