Crutchlow and Byrne Take Opening Victories of BSB 2008
April 20, 2008
Shane Byrne and Cal Crutchlow ended a thrilling weekend of British Superbikes racing with wins in the first and second races respectively of the opening round of the 2008 Championship at Thruxton. With both riders also recording a second place finish, they go into the next round of racing as joint leaders of the series.
The first race saw Byrne get off to a bad start, as Leon Haslam, Michael Rutter and Cal Crutchlow had overtaken him by the end of the first lap. Crutchlow led for much of the early laps but Byrne eventually regained his focus and stole through to the lead on the 13th lap and powered away to win the race comfortably. Crutchlow stayed in contention and earned a deserved second place, while NorthWest 200 Ducati’s Michael Rutter rounded off the podium places.
The second race saw Leon Haslam take an early lead after a solid fourth place in the first race. However it was short lived as Byrne got past the HM Plant Honda rider on the fourth lap, followed by Crutchlow and Rutter. The seventh lap saw a horrific crash as Tom Sykes lost control and his bike flew into Karl Harris, leading to an immediate stop to the race. Harris amazingly escaped without any serious injuries, although he was ruled out for the restart. Sykes jumped on his spare machine and led the opening lap of the restart, but was soon overtaken by a determined Cal Crutchlow who went on to take his first win.
