Mladin Storms To Convincing Win At Laguna Seca

July 22, 2008

Mat Mladin came away with an important win with a solid performance at an action packed Laguna Seca this weekend that saw both the MotoGP and AMA Superbikes Championship racing on the famous California track.

Sunday’s racing began with the prestigious MotoGP race which saw AMA stars Ben Spies and Jamie Hacking take part as wild card entry and replacement rider respectively. Hacking came a respectable 11th while Spies went even better to finish 8th, even lapping as one of the fastest riders on the track towards the end of the race, only legends Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner out-pacing the American.

The start of the AMA race saw Ben Spies try to keep up his form by leading most of the first lap, only to be overtaken by Mladin going into the second lap. The Australian was then unstoppable as he opened up a comfortable lead to power through to the end. Spies finshed comfortably second, with Aaron Yates pipping Jamie Hacking to the final podium spot by less than 0.1 of a second.

Mladin has now scored two consecutive wins, helping to close the gap on Spies in the rider’s Championship after the Texan had won 7 consecutive races.

The AMA Superbike championship will continue in two weeks time at the Mid-Ohio Sports car course the first weekend of August.
