Carlos Checa on Form in the US

June 2, 2008

Carlos Checa fought his way to an emphatic double win in the 6th round of the World Superbikes Championship at the Miller Motorsports Park yesterday, giving Honda their 100th win in World Superbike racing.

It was the first return to the USA for World Superbikes in 2 years, with 51,000 spectators watching the day’s racing. It was particularly pleasing for Spanish rider Checa, as the first double win of his career was added to by new lap records in both races on top of the Superpole win on Saturday.

The first race was a fairly straight forward win for Checa, leading from pole position all the way to the checkered flag. Second place went to Troy Corser, while 3rd went to an impressive Michele Fabrizio who was down in 14th place at the end of the first lap.

The second race was led by Max Neukirchner through the early laps, but by lap 9 was passed by Checa who went on to cruise to his first double win. Neukirchner settled for 2nd while Fabrizio repeated his earlier performance by moving through from 12th place to 3rd.

The two results mean Checa has now closed the gap to first place in the Championship to just 28 points - current leader Troy Bayliss having a torrid weekend, crashing out of the first race and a technical problem in the second leaving him with no points to take away.

The next race on the calendar will be at the famous Nürburgring in Germany on June 15.
