Byrne Takes Double at Incident Packed Oulton Park

Shane Byrne tightened his grip on the 2008 BSB lead today by taking both wins in a day of racing at Oulton Park littered by incidents.
The first race wasn’t even a lap old before being stopped after 3 incidents involving 5 riders going down. To top it off rain began to fall before the restart, giving the teams a difficult choice to make before sending their riders out again. Airwaves Ducati seemed to make the right decision, helping Shane Byrne to take the lead after just a few laps and hold on to the end despite a late push from HM Plant Honda’s Leon Haslam. Leon Camier rounded off the podium places.
In the second race it was Tom Sykes who led early on, closely followed by Cal Crutchlow and Leon Haslam. Haslam soon took second, and in his determined attempt to take a first win of the season, attempted a controversial overtaking manoevre which took out teammate Sykes and allowed Crutclow through to take the lead. It didn’t last long however as Byrne once again powered through and took the lead on the 12th lap. The next lap saw Crutchlow crash sustaining ankle injuries, leading to a red flag which ended the race. Byrne was credited with the victory, while Leon Haslam, who had finished fourth, was disqualified following his earlier incident that ended Sykes’ race.
The results give Byrne a healthy lead in the championship over teammate Leon Camier, who is closely followed by Cal Crutchlow and Michael Rutter, 1 and 2 points behind the second placed man respectively.
