Bayliss Takes Both Wins In Assen

April 27, 2008

Troy Bayliss continued his amazing run of form today, taking convincing wins in both races at Assen TT Circuit in the Netherlands in the fourth round of the World Superbikes Championship today.

In the first race it was Suzuki Alstare rider Kagayama who took the early lead, but a mistake by the Japanese let in Bayliss who powered through to lead all the way to the end of the race, eventually winning by two seconds. Second place was being contested right to the last corner by Carlos Checa and Max Neukirchner. Memories of their last corner in race one at Valencia must still have been fresh in the mind (they managed to take each other out of the race - Neukirchner suffering a broken collarbone) as no big risks were taken and Spaniard Checa took the second place finish, German Neukirchner finishing third. Kagayama eventually finished third.

The second race was controlled from start to finish by Bayliss, taking the win ahead of a determined Noriyuki Haga who pushed the Australian all the way, eventually finishing just 0.082 seconds behind. Second in the rider’s championship Carlos Checa recovered from a bad start to take the final podium place from fellow countryman Ruben Xaus on a thrilling final lap.

The two wins mean Bayliss takes a massive lead in the championship with him to Monza on May 11, increasing his lead over Carlos Checa to 70 points. The next few races in Italy, the USA and Germany will be key in determining how close this year’s championship will be and you can be sure to hear all the information here!

It’s going to take something special to beat Bayliss this year. It might already be too late!
