30-Strong Lineup Confirmed For British Superbikes 2009
March 20, 2009
The British Superbikes Championship gets under way in April and it looks set to be another thrilling, competitive season of racing. Organisers Motorsport Vision have confirmed there will be a total of 30 riders and 5 manufacturers taking part in the 2009 championship.
With new teams, riders and the odd new colour scheme and logo design, the 2009 BSB championship will have a very different look to last season. Many of the top riders from 2008 have moved up to the World Superbikes series (with some showing great potential already in the early rounds of racing), meaning there is room for some of the young guns to showcase their abilities over the coming months.
The premier British motorbike racing series has bucked the trend of most championships around the world, with the economic downturn not seeming to affect teams and sponsors this year. There will be 4 factory-backed teams, helping to maintain the high level of entries.
BSB Series Director Stuart Higgs explained of the upcoming season:
We took account of the current financial situation in our planning, working to keep costs down but also providing a championship that is high on value with big exposure not just in terms of spectator attendances but also through our significant television broadcast coverage which in 2009 will well exceed 240 hours.
By taking note of feedback from the teams, we have provided another quality championship, this year decided over 26 races at 12 events, with full support, a level playing field thanks to our one-make Pirelli tyre contract, and they have responded with a magnificent entry, the envy of others at all levels of the sport, which will ensure that we remain the top domestic series across the world.”
The season will kickstart on Easter Monday, 13th April at Brands Hatch.
